Clendening Chosen for Global Engagement Scholarship

CONWAY, Ark. (February 27, 2019) 鈥 Maddie Clendening 鈥20 has been selected to receive an Insight Into Diversity Global Engagement Travel Scholarship from the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE). The $2,000 award will support Clendening鈥檚 travel expenses for an international engagement experience between May and December 2019. She will accept the scholarship award during the NADOHE Awards Ceremony on Friday, March 8, in Philadelphia.听

NADOHE designed this scholarship to encourage global engagement among students from a broad cross-section of society, including first-generation college students, students from rural or isolated areas, students with disabilities, students from low socio-economic backgrounds, those with different racial/ethnic or religious backgrounds, and LGBTQ+ students.听

Clendening, a politics and psychology double major from North Little Rock, has narrowed the choice of international engagement experience to two options: either a French language program at the Universit茅 de Caen in Normandie, France, or the Lex Fellowship in Barcelona, Spain. At the Universit茅 de Caen, she would study French; in Barcelona, she would participate in a pre-law fellowship program. During either program, she plans to focus on improving her foreign language skills and further discerning her career goals. Regardless of the location, she intends to spend time learning more about the LGBTQ+ community there, and to volunteer with local LGBTQ+ nonprofits.听

鈥淭his opportunity would not have been possible without the generous scholarship from NADOHE, and I am excited to learn more about the world around me during this adventure,鈥 Clendening said.

As a condition of accepting the scholarship, Clendening will write a paper or create a blog to describe her global engagement experience and the learning outcome or outcomes, or perform a 10-hour service commitment relevant to the experience.

Clendening was nominated for the scholarship by Dr. Dionne Jackson 鈥96, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, Chief Diversity Officer for the College, and a NADOHE member.

鈥淚 am so grateful that NADOHE designed a scholarship to encourage global engagement among underrepresented students from diverse backgrounds,鈥 Jackson said. 鈥淢addie has a passion for understanding the world around her and a heart for service. I am excited about how she will utilize this scholarship to build her own knowledge base while also considering how to use what she gains to better others.鈥
