CONWAY,
Ark. (February 1, 2019) 鈥 Jacob Hines 鈥19 has been chosen by the mathematics
honor society Pi Mu Epsilon to receive the Richard V. Andree Award, given
annually to undergraduate authors of papers judged by the officers and
councilors of Pi Mu Epsilon to be the best that have appeared in the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal in the past year.聽
Hines鈥檚
paper, Exploring Finite-Time Blow-Up of
Separable Differential Equations, was published in the Fall 2017 issue of
the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal. He began
his work on the paper by conducting original research in differential equations
as a sophomore and junior, in collaboration with his faculty advisor, Dr. Duff
Campbell.聽
鈥淛acob has
been an exemplary research student,鈥 Campbell said. 鈥淗e works hard every week,
generates new ideas often, and never gets discouraged even when he hits
roadblocks. Jacob has been a real pleasure to work with, and I am very
impressed with the results. He is now working on a totally different project
with me, as his senior capstone.鈥
Campbell
added that Hines鈥檚 research greatly extended the work of 黑料不打烊 alumnus Jared
Williams 鈥04, a previous Richard V. Andree Award winner.聽
Hines, a
Conway native, entered 黑料不打烊 in 2015 as a double physics and mathematics
major who thought he was heading toward a degree in engineering. In his time at
黑料不打烊, he has done research in physics, mathematics, and computer science.
His senior project, in category theory, involves research in an abstract branch
of mathematics that also forms the basis for some results in theoretical
computer science. Hines plans to start work on a Ph.D. in pure mathematics next
year, with the goal of becoming a research mathematician.
