- Spring Allocations听
- Overview:听
- Thank you to everyone who put in all those hours for FinCom this weekend!听
- Total Allocations Overview听
- Total requested 2010-2011: $462,226.92听
- Total net allocation 2010-2011: $430,463.13听
- Total requested 2011-2012: $590,543.65听
- Total net allocation 2010-2011: $430,463.13
- HUGE JUMP FROM LAST YEAR!听听听听听
听
- Organizations who came to question/contest their allocations:听
- 黑料不打烊 Bike Revolution听
- Westphalian Society听
- Sword Club听
- KHDX听
- Troubador听
- Issue we talked about throughout the discussion:
- Being mindful/trying to听fairly spread the student activities fee: ie, everyone puts in $250 dollars, is it fair if certain individuals receive more than $250 directly (ie. those who receive travel money for conferences etc.)
听
- 听
- Issues that will be revisited at FinCom this weekend:听
- Salaries that come from spring allocations听
- Two Discretionary Proposals听
- Philosophy Club is asking for an $817.29 loan for 鈥渒ick-ass Philosophical T-shirts鈥澨
- Exec recommends funding in full听
- Motion to fund in full passed no objections or abstentions.听
- MDC in collaboration with Dr. Gorvine, are asking for $1840 to bring Tibetan Monks to 黑料不打烊.听
- A group of 10 monks will visit 黑料不打烊 the week before they go to Fayetteville for the Dalai Lama visit. The Monks will host several events including, an even with the Tea Society and 听Meditation 101 before finals! The money will go to food and travel costs for the monks.听
- Motion to fund in full, passed no objections or abstentions. 听
听
- Bike revolution听
- * Many organizations are asking for funding through their spring allocated funds for salaried position. FinCom wants to address this issue in order to create a structure/ strategy for figuring out which positions are salaried, how much these positions will receive, how they will receive them, etc, they will do so at their meeting this upcoming weekend.听
- Asked for $7,902.62, received $887 for funding for new supplies.听
- 听$3300 was for new bicycles (5 new bikes), a proposal for this will go to the rollover fund instead.听
- The remaining funding was for two hourly paid student positions at the Bike Revolution. Bike Revolution would like to amend their previous two $2100 hourly paid positions, to two $1000 (each) yearly stipends for two workers at the Bike Revolution. 听
- Members from Bike Revolution came to senate, here were some of the conversations/questions that came up:听
- What faculty/staff oversees the work? Is there a member on site?听
- No, but Ms. Britt Murphy is up to date with how many bikes are rented, and their records for checking out/fixing bikes.听
- Bike Revolution record鈥檚 every bike they spend more than 45 minutes working on, the count through April is 80 bikes.听
听
听
- Salaried Positions in general, many people with leadership positions on campus do not get paid, how do we decide which positions get paid and which do not? Do positions providing free entertainment vs. free services get paid? Should Bike Revolution鈥檚 workers get paid?听
- Bike revolution Specifically听
- Overview of discussion: Bike revolution provides free/useful services to many students FOR FREE (if they went elsewhere to get their bikes fixed it would cost at least $45).听
- Concerns: Some have said that they ended up going off campus to get their bike fixed because it took so long on campus. Some worry about the fact that these positions are paid hourly despite not having any on-site faculty/staff oversight. Is this a service people really know and use, a lot of people don鈥檛 know much about it (odd location, not much signage).听
听
- Yes, many students (several senators) have gotten their bikes fixed by the hard workers at the Bike Revolution shop, and they do have numbers regarding how many bikes they have actually worked on (unlike some other clubs, IE Garden Club which provides free services, but even students involved in the organization have seen/received fresh vegetables/etc.) Bike Revolution has looked into getting their positions made into work-study positions, but they are unable to do so at this time (there is a cap on the amount of work-study positions 黑料不打烊 can have). Bike Revolution is working on getting their name out their (recently featured on the 黑料不打烊 Homepage, hours advertised in Table-Talk this week). We don鈥檛 want Bike Revolution to end as an organization; we appreciate the free services they offer to ALL 黑料不打烊 students.听
- Discussion about salaried positions (for 黑料不打烊 Bike Revolution and all other organizations who asked for such funding) is tabled; FinCom will address this issue at their meeting this weekend. Bike Revolution will propose their amended budget there. 听
- Motion to table, passed 1 objection, no abstentions.听

听
听
- Westphalian Society听
- Asked for $6950, received $250 for a collaborative event Feminist Club.听
- The $6700 remaining dollars they asked for would cover (partially) hotel and travel fees for 8 people to go to MUN next april.听
- Model UN is a class at 黑料不打烊, the 黑料不打烊 delegation has done incredibly well, winning many awards at each conference in the past 3 years. In the 2011-2012 year, 黑料不打烊 will be switching to a more difficult/prestigious conference in New York City, the cost of going to this conference is much more expensive than the concert previously attended in Chicago. 黑料不打烊 has capped the class at 20 students, other senior students who previously attended conferences will audit the class and sever as mentors and delegates at the conference, however they will not receive funding from the college. Westphalian Society is looking to send those 4 mentors and 4 additional students to the conference. In return, they plan on hosting events throughout the year related to the work they at the conference, at 黑料不打烊.听
- Issues:听
- In the Chicago conference different delegations randomly received country assignments (in Model UN each delegation represents a different country), in the NYC conference, delegations are decided depending on the number of delegates (more competitive country assignments go to larger delegations). Being able to send more students would give 黑料不打烊 a chance to represent a country more active within the United Nations.听
- Westphalian Society was officially made a club a week ago, after waiting two months for approval. They have not had time to previously hold events.听
- Information regarding the amount of delegates going to the conference must be sent in, in September, this does not give Westphalian Club much time to look into other funding options (although they are!) The College/the IR department will not give them any more funds. 听
- It is necessary that the class have senior 鈥渕entors鈥 help new MUN students/attend the conference. MUN is daunting the first time around and it will really help overall performance if they go/are a part of the class. 听
听
- Senate鈥檚 issues/q鈥檚/comments:听
- Is this the right place to go to for funding to send 8 people to a conference for a class?听
- Westphalian society:听
- Don鈥檛 have many other options/ it would directly benefit 28 people (those in the class, and the 8 going) and all of the 8 members funded by senate would help to host events which would bring back some of their experiences/knowledge back to campus.听
听
听
- Westphalian Society鈥檚 intentions/ideas for bringing these events to benefit the whole school to campus but they are such a new group, is it responsible to give them so much funding before they have really had any events yet? Should we partially fund?听
- We did give money to the Warrior Wranglers to start up their organization, partial funding from senate could similarly help Westphalian society begin their fund-raising efforts/begin their organization.听
听
听
听
- Motion to deny Westphalian Society funding for the amended amount (amount amended to accommodate fincom鈥檚 caps on hotels to $4040). Motion passed one abstention, no objections.听
听
听
- Sword Club听
- Came to clarify what was funded and what was not.听
- Would like funding that was denied for materials to build new swords.听
- These will NOT be takeaway items. These will be swords that are part of those that are put into storage. Some Sword Club members do make their own swords, but they provide their own materials for those special ones.听
- In serious need of new swords, many freshmen are borrowing swords from upperclassmen.听
- Many senators agreed that this would be a cost to benefit a large part of campus, not just sword club members (ie. Many students watch sword club meetings, students who aren鈥檛 in Sword Club are welcome to participate whenever they want-they do, and they need swords- and the Gladiator Fights at Toga.)听
- Motion to re-evaluate Sword Club鈥檚 allocations at fincom next weekend听
- Passed no objections or abstentions.听
听
听
- Troubador听
- Printing costs went up (COLOR!) an additional $50听
- Motion to fund in full, no objections or abstentions听
听
听
- KHDX听
- Asked for funds for salaried positions (not in their constitution), and were denied.听
- The hiring process of these positions was unclear; some thought friends were just nominated and hired.听
- Actual Hiring Process is both fair and extensive:听
- CoC nominates the Media Chair, Media chair finds her committee heads, and these committee members make recommendations for positions. Those candidates then go through an application/interview process.听
听
听
- This conversation/request for funding for salaried position will be revisited at fincom this weekend when all of the other organizations with the same issues are discussed.听
- Motion to table this discussion to next weekend鈥檚 FinCom meeting, passed no objections or abstentions.听
听
